HISTORY OF MESHINGOMESIA GOLF & SOCIAL CLUB

The first organizational meeting of Marion Country Club took place at the Commercial Club on January 20th, 1902. Between 1902 and 1906 it is assumed the newly formed Marion Country Club held meetings at various places in and around Marion as well as continued to play golf at the Marion Golf Club formerly located in downtown Marion. On February 13th, 1906 at a meeting held at the Commercial Club it was announced that Marion Country Club had leased the Norton farm with a beginning lease date of March 1, 1906.

The original nine hole layout was conceived and complete by Willie Still and opening for play on July 9, 1906. Of the original 9 holes only #2 and #3 of the present layout remain intact. The Country Club held a formal opening of the Clubhouse on June 7, 1907 of the new Two Story Mission Style Clubhouse that encompassed nearly 17,500 square feet.

During April 1919 the Club was reorganized and incorporated under new leadership, and at this time the name was changed to Meshingomesia Country Club in honor of Miami Native American Chief Meshingomesia. Chief Meshingomesia was well respected in the area for his and his tribes many acts of trust and kindness. He passed away on Dec. 16, 1879 at the age of 98 and the Club is honored to remember him through its name.

According to the historical webpage of Mr. Bill Diddle, he is credited with the design of 9 holes at Marion Country Club in 1927 and also a re-design in 1955 of Meshingomesia Country Club during the time the Club expanded to an 18 hole layout. Also given credit for the during the 1955 re-design is Clarence Lamboley who served many years as Golf Professional and Course Superintendent.

Meshingomesia is now in its fifth generation and throughout the Club's 100+ year history the Club has seen many more great changes than can be briefly accounted. Meshingomesia is the only full service facility in the area that is committed to providing an exceptional private club experience for all members and their families. Our beautiful two story mission-style clubhouse underwent major renovations in 2011 to modernize the interior of the Clubhouse as well as create a timeless and classic feeling to its spacious amenities.

Meshingomesia Golf Club is proud to have assembled a dedicated staff to include Robbie Riddle, Golf Professional; Robert Kowatch, Golf Course Superintendent and Chef Jason Carter, now operating The Tomahawk at Meshingomesia Golf Club.
